Is the vicar hot? (and other stories)
Welcome back (to me)!

As some of you may know, I used to be a mediocre food blogger. For about two years I baked things and took and posted terrible pictures of the things I baked. I had an idea back then that I would be a journalist, and I was once told that the only way to get a job as a journalist was to have a popular blog.
This may have been true back in 2009 (or maybe not, who knows!) but I never had a popular blog, and consequently, I work in a library now. But, in my efforts to become a journalist I had a food blog for almost two years, during the end of high school. Mostly I made a lot of cupcakes, because they were trendy, and also because I couldn't drive, and baking gave me something to do. I do not miss trying to monetize a blog at 17 (I failed) but I do miss writing about one of my all time favorite subjects: food. So here is my first edition of Bad Food Pictures Weekly (this week with no food pictures)
Fortunately for all involved, I'm a much better cook now than I was then, and I wanted to get back to writing. My newsletter will probably be a lot of Food Thoughts, such as:
vegan ice cream ratings
recipes for things that are *mostly* vegan except I used butter
things that I made for dinner that were particularly good
things that I made for dinner that were especially bad
endless complaints about how actually the food in New York is way overrated
As well as:
things I learn while researching reference letters I write
the ocasional cat pic
Important topics of discussion such as: is the vicar from Grantchester hot? and is Channing Tatum a communist?
Recipe recommendations:
I didn't start doing this until yesterday, so I haven't taken any pictures of my ugly food yet, but I'll get you some pics in the next digest. In lieu of the content I promised you, I'm giving a recipe recommendation for a galette I've been making every summer for a few years. It isn't the season for tomatoes in NYC quite yet, but it is in other parts of the country. I highly recommend the burst tomato galette from Smitten Kitchen. If you make the dough the day before it's pretty easy to make the rest of it after work, if you want it to be a whole meal I suggest like, some green beans or some other sort of salad, or I dunno, sausage or something, whatever you can do while it's in the oven.
If you have a vegan galette dough that you like, let me know what it is, because I haven't found one yet. This also makes a pretty good filling/sauce for stuff in general, so if you plop some on noodles it would be great, just add some herbs and a bit of lemon juice and a splash of pasta water.
The moment you've all been waiting for: the thic vic
My favorite genre of TV is historical detective bullshit, and recently I started watching Grantchester, which is okay (I mean it's great, it's like Father Brown, another period piece about a vicar who solves murders, but everyone in it is more attractive). The real question that has been raised by this show is... is the vicar hot?

I have heard him referred to as "thic" which is deeply upsetting. This is a show about a vicar, and hearing him described as thic makes me think some of yall should find god.
The reference letter corner:
I write reference letters to people who are in prison. They write in to the New York Public Library with questions that they have, and I answer them. I've learned some really interesting things this way. Unfortunately, the thing I have learned over and over again is not a surprise: prisons do not care about what happens to you. I have received so many letters from people who need to know of emergency homeless shelters, and food banks, near the prisons they will be released from. It is a travesty that people have to write in to a library to get this information. I also have an opportunity to learn alongside my letter writers, for example I've learned lots about marine aquariums because I have one correspondent who is always asking for detailed information about them. You can probably expect more updates about things I've learned while answering reference letters here. In the mean time, consider donating to one of these organizations:

Here's a picture from the sensational Netflix original series Neo Yokio that I had saved to my desktop for some reason. Communism forever!

Some questions for you:
Did you make anything this week that I should try? More importantly, is the vicar hot? I'm doing an unofficial poll.
Email me back! Lets stay in touch. (Here is my obligatory beg for you to share this with your friends, or friends of mine that you think would like hearing from me on a semi regular basis)
